Healthy Growth: The DFD Russell Story

For decades, DFD Russell Medical Centers has been the kind of place rural Maine runs on. It’s a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) serving Turner, Leeds, Monmouth, and the communities around them. Day in and day out, DFD delivers the steady, personal, no-one-turned-away care that helps a small town hold together, care good enough to earn Patient-Centered Medical Home recognition at the highest level of achievement.

The care was never the question. The question was whether the community fully understood what DFD is, and who it’s for.

A Great Story, Misunderstood

When DFD first came to Warp + Weft, the organization had everything going for it except a clear way to tell its story. DFD had a logo, but not much of a brand behind it. And the bigger challenge wasn’t awareness, it was perception. Plenty of people knew DFD’s name. What they didn’t always know was what DFD actually offered.

Some assumed it was a walk-in clinic. Others thought it was only for patients on MaineCare or those who qualified for the sliding-fee scale. In truth, DFD is a full-service primary care home, open to everyone in the community, whatever their insurance or income. Closing the gap between what DFD is and what people assumed it was: that was the real work.

So we did what we always do first. We listened. We talked with administration, providers, and patients, and we listened hard to the community that didn’t fully understand what DFD offered. Then we built the brand DFD never really had. We kept the logo they came in with and built a complete identity around it: a cohesive visual system, a style guide to keep every touchpoint consistent, a clear brand strategy, and a comprehensive messaging toolkit that finally said, in plain terms, who DFD is and who it’s for.

We audited the existing print and digital collateral, built DFD a modern website, and turned the whole effort into an effective marketing strategy, complete with a fresh social presence and an email newsletter that gave DFD a direct line to the people it serves.

The Payoff

The change was immediate. In the months after the initial push, new patients per month rose 62%, the social following grew by 350%, and the email newsletter hit a 50% open rate, the kind of number that means people genuinely want to hear from you. For a small health center in a very rural stretch of Maine, working with a lean budget, that kind of traction is remarkable.

That could have been the end of a very good story. Instead, it was the start of a partnership.

Staying Power

DFD didn’t treat this work as one-and-done. They continued to partner with Warp + Weft for ongoing marketing strategy and support, and the momentum kept building. Between 2024 and 2025, website users grew 18% to 57,987, the email list welcomed 657 new subscribers, and Facebook page views jumped 97%. Numbers like that would be strong for any organization, and they’re especially meaningful for a small healthcare group serving a rural community on a conservative budget.

Steady, compounding growth, year over year.

Seeing the Whole Picture

Numbers like these only matter if you can see them clearly and understand what they mean. So we don’t guess. We keep a constant read on what’s working and what isn’t, using tools like Agency Analytics to pull DFD’s website, social, email, and campaign data into one live dashboard. That lets us dig past surface metrics to find what’s actually moving the needle and adjust as we go. It also gives DFD a clear, visual window into exactly how their marketing is performing, so the results are never a black box. It’s one of the ways we keep the work honest and always improving.

More Than 500 New Patients

The clearest proof came in 2026. Over six months, we ran a dedicated new-patient advertising campaign for DFD, targeting a rural community with a modest budget. The results spoke for themselves: more than 500 new patients. 538, to be exact. For a rural health center whose whole mission is making sure care reaches the people who need it, that isn’t just a marketing metric. That’s 538 more neighbors with a provider, a care plan, and a place to turn, many of them people who finally understood that place was for them all along.

The Long View

What began as a sharper message and a smarter strategy has grown into years of steady partnership and steady growth. DFD built the care. We help make sure the community knows it’s there. And by every number we track, more of those neighbors find their way through the door each year.
